Hi! James here! I own the place. Let me tell you about how it came to be. I'll keep it brief-ish.

Southend Music Exchange was established in January 2021, primarily as a way to acquire all of the guitar equipment on earth, but secondly to provide Southend with a guitar shop that actually has a soul. What started as a largely unplanned dream scribbled down on various bits of paper has flourished into one of the essential hubs for music in Southend and Essex. 

We're tone nutters here. I've always been a complete guitar nerd. Inspired back in the noughties to pick up guitar by the mighty James Hetfield, the journey started there and has never stopped. I was joined in late 2025 by Harry Groom, our store manager and a man widely agreed by absolutely everyone to be bloody lovely. His love of Pavement was all I really needed to know.

Southend Music Exchange swiftly became renowned for its wide variety of stock and endless warm welcomes. We don't do bullshit here. Amassing over 150 flawless reviews, as well as over 400 on Reverb, we stand for integrity, inclusion and quality. Zero compromises. Always independent, everything we sell is second hand and sourced from the local community.
